70th National Film Awards: Mithun Chakraborty Honored with Dadasaheb Phalke Awards

Mithun Chakraborty Reflects on his 4-Decade-long Career as He Receives Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty was honored with the highest recognition in Indian cinema, the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award presented by President Droupadi Murmu at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony held in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan. This award celebrates Mithun’s extraordinary contributions to the film industry, marking a significant moment in his career that spans over four decades.

In his acceptance speech, Mithun humbly admitted that speaking on such an occasion was more challenging than acting. He shared a candid and heartfelt reflection on his journey, expressing his gratitude to his fans and the film fraternity for their continued support. “I have been on this stage thrice before, and it’s all because of your blessings,” Mithun said.

The actor then took the audience back to when he received his first National Film Award in 1976 for Mrigayaa. He recalled the excitement and pride he felt and how the award went to his head. “I started believing I was Al Pacino,” he joked, explaining how his newfound fame initially led to a change in his attitude. However, a producer’s harsh rejection quickly humbled him, teaching him a valuable lesson about staying grounded.

Mithun also opened up about some of the more difficult challenges he faced, particularly the racism he encountered in the film industry. He revealed how people would tell him that his dark complexion wouldn’t succeed in Bollywood, with some even calling him offensive names. Rather than letting this defeat him, Mithun stood out through his dancing. “I danced in a very different way, with my legs, so people saw my legs, not my colour,” he humorously remarked, acknowledging how his signature dance moves eventually made him a beloved star.

Reflecting on his career, Mithun often questioned why success didn’t come easy, despite his talent and hard work. However, after receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he said he finally stopped complaining, recognizing that every struggle had led him to this moment of immense honor.

With over 350 films to his name, he has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. His versatility as an actor is evident in iconic films like Disco Dancer, Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, Agneepath and many others, showcasing his ability to master diverse roles across genres. Known for his legendary dance moves and powerful performances his contribution to the industry has been unparalleled, influencing generations of actors and filmmakers.

Today, as Mithun Chakraborty accepts the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, his journey from a young actor facing rejection and prejudice to becoming one of Bollywood’s most revered stars is a testament to his resilience, talent, and dedication.
