Addressing the nation on International Yoga Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the world views yoga as a catalyst for global good. Initially scheduled to address the nation on the banks of Dal Lake, persistent rain necessitated moving the event indoors. The Prime Minister is now participating in a 30-minute yoga session. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores yoga’s crucial role in promoting both individual well-being and social harmony.

Over the years, PM Modi has led Yoga Day celebrations at various iconic locations, including Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, and Jabalpur. Last year, he led the events at the UN Headquarters in New York, which is anticipated to draw increased attention to the Srinagar programme.

The International Day of Yoga (IDY) is celebrated annually on June 21 to highlight its significant benefits for overall health and well-being. This observance was established by the United Nations in 2014.

PM Modi proposed the idea of a global day dedicated to yoga during his 2014 address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In December 2014, the UNGA passed a resolution declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day.
