Dilli 32 review: Grand Trunk Road food festival reaches Delhi!

Sattu and gur ka sherbet
Sattu and gur ka sherbet

The next pit stop after Amritsar on The Dilli 32’s Grand Trunk Road journey is Delhi. Dilli 32 at the The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel specialises in Indian cuisine and Delhi proved to be an excellent muse for Executive Chef Rajat Tokhi and Chef Ashwini Singh. Delhi’s authentic food which evolved in the by lanes of red fort is still omnipresent in Old Delhi. Which Dilli 32 took special pains to perfect, whether it is the ever famous Anmol Roast Chicken or a non descriptive shop near Jama Masjid that sells Sattu and Gur ka Sharbat. The food creates the magic of Delhi along with renowned storyteller Asif Khan Dehlvi bringing out the best of what Delhi was about and highlighting our rich heritage.

Pateli kebab
Pateli kebab

Our culinary journey began with some refreshing Aam Panna and then a magnificently prepared sattu aur gur ka sharbat. The flavours of Delhi came alive with the beautiful food by Chef Ashwini Singh and stories spun by Dehlvi. First up were the intricate starters, the kathal or jackfruit shaami is the best vegetarian kebab I have tasted. Anmol Roast Chicken in learnt from the ever famous Anmol in Old Delhi and named after the iconic restaurant. The perfectly roasted chicken is dunked in butter to give you the best roasted chicken ever!

Dahi bhalla, dry fruit chaat and aloo chaat
Dahi bhalla, dry fruit chaat and aloo chaat

The dahi bhalla, an important Delhi favorite, is soft spongy and the melt in your mouth variety with the right amount of chutney to balance things. The dry fruit ki chaat is a nice bet for vegetarians. While the non vegetarian lovers can try their dry fruit infused Pateli kebab and the rich Mutton burra.

Raan e Jahangiri
Raan e Jahangiri

The main course is equally spread out, the Raan e Jahangiri is one of the most delicious mutton dishes I have tasted. The Alu Ghost ka salan was something I doubted when I was served but it is a beautiful combination as the potato soaks the mutton juices and spices and it is a must try for everyone! It goes well with the khamiri roti. Chicken changezi with its right amount of spiciness is a Punjabi favourite and well made here.

Dal Arhar Kaeri
Dal Arhar Kaeri

Arvi ka salan is yummy and probably the best arvi dish. The Dal Arhar Kaeri is dal which is infused with green mangoes and the slightly sour flavour is beautiful. It goes well with the besani roti.

The dessert platter is gorgeous with its crispy hot Jalebi, cold refreshing Gulathi and a slightly sour halwa called the Gudamba. And a paan as you move out to complete what Delhi stands for, royalty!
