Anant Ambani, the billionaire heir, is all set to marry his longtime sweetheart, Radhika Merchant, on July 12. Known for his trademark wide smile, Anant’s wedding is being dubbed India’s “wedding of the year.” With an estimated net worth of $113.7 billion as of March 2024, the Ambani family is renowned for their lavish celebrations, all while deeply embracing their Gujarati culture.
The festivities began with a dazzling mameru ceremony held at the Ambani residence. This cherished Gujarati tradition featured Radhika’s maternal uncle showering her with sweets and gifts, adding a heartwarming touch to the joyous atmosphere.
What Is Mameru Ceremony?
The Mameru ceremony, also known as mosaalu, is a traditional Gujarati ritual where the bride’s maternal uncle, affectionately called Mama, along with her maternal aunt’s husband, visit her with sweets and gifts.
In the ceremony, the bride and groom touch the feet of the mama and mami to seek their blessings. This emotional ritual strengthens the bond between maternal relatives.
Now comes the time for gifts. These typically include a Panetar saree, jewelry, ivory or white chura (bangles), and an assortment of sweets and dry fruits beautifully arranged in trousseau trays.
The mameru ceremony takes place separately at the bride’s and groom’s houses, marking the beginning of the main wedding rituals and celebrations.
Radhika Merchant’s looks from her pre-wedding celebrations have set major fashion trends, and her attire at the recently concluded mameru ceremony was no exception. This ritual, which kicked off her wedding ceremonies at Antilia, saw Radhika in a custom Manish Malhotra outfit featuring ‘Durga-shloka’ embroidered on the borders. She complemented her stunning attire with her mother Shaila Merchant’s jewelry, which Shaila reportedly wore at her own mameru ceremony.
