Check out people’s reactions to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country:

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down and left the country following weeks of protests against her government that resulted in hundreds of deaths.

Hasina, 76, resigned on Monday after last month’s student-led demonstrations against the quota system for government jobs escalated into widespread demands for her removal – marking the most severe political crisis in her 15-year tenure.

As tens of thousands of people surrounded government offices and residences in the capital, Dhaka, Hasina fled in an army helicopter with her sister. According to Indian media reports, she landed in New Delhi.

In an address to the nation, Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced that an interim government will now oversee the country of 170 million people, although he did not provide further details.

In Dhaka on Monday, police and other government buildings were attacked and set on fire. Protesters attempted to tear down a statue of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is Ms. Hasina’s father.

Army and police units were deployed across the city, and mobile phone service was reportedly cut off for several hours before being restored. Protesters were seen carrying out furniture from the prime minister’s residence.
