Twitter loses legal protection in India for not complying with the new IT laws of India.
Twitter has lost its legal protection in India for not complying with new IT rules and it stands as the only social media platform which is yet to do so. An interim Chief Compliance Officer has also been appointed.
If the intermediary status is taken away from Twitter then as a publisher, it can be held accountable for any unlawful content that is published on their platform. The top executive and MD will also be held responsible and may be questioned for criminal liability under IPC.
Twitter disclosed that it has appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer and the IT Ministry will soon be receiving details. Immediate appointment was not made and that landed this micro-blogging site in a series of trouble.
According to the new IT law, social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users should appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer; they all should be residents of India.
What do you think of Twitter’s decision?
