From Vidya’s matronly style to Sonam’s experimental Indian look to Aishwarya’s distasteful designer suit, Cannes has been a horrible reflection of how to dress in Indian wear. We are not even mentioning the likes of Sherlyn Chopra here!
Even though most of our B’towners attended the 66th Cannes film festival went with a box full of ethnic wear to show the love for their country, not many of them actually fared well.
In fact, Vidya’s Sabyasachi looks had us cringing every time she walked the Cannes Film Festival thinking she looked regal princess-like. While her over-covered look had nothing to do with fabrics but more about hiding her body, we felt.
While all the stars were showing the world how not to dress in traditional Indian garb, one actress was quietly wearing her ethnic weaves without a dress designer in tow. Nandita Das might not have brought out the gaudy, blingy traditional wear but she surely made a mark on how Indians actually dress.
Yes, many of you may say that Cannes is a glamorous film festival and Nandita was underdressed but Nandita looked charming and realistic. She was the only star to boldly sport what a modern Indian woman really wears and feels confident in.
The surprise was that Ameesha fared a bit better than the rest. How can something like selecting a sari and accessories fall so wrong? We would pick Nandita over a bevy if these celebs the next time someone asks us, ‘What is ethnic Indian wear?’
