Vidya Balan’s look in Ghanchakkar has piqued curiosity about her character. Vidya is seen wearing loud, bright, and neon apparel in the film. She plays Neetu Bhatia a Punjabi housewife with a quirky fashion sense.
But Punjabi women are not too happy with the portrayal. “Show me one girl any girl not even Punjabi who dresses like her. She should have opted for nice and bright suits over the ghastly clothes she choose,” said Navneet Batra, a housewife.
Her look has been created by designer Subarna Ray Chaudhuri. Vidya’s outfits in the film are sourced from export surplus stores and local street shops. “Yes, we Punjabis are loud but that is our nature not our dress sense,” says Manisha Vatta, a 29-year-old journalist.
According to reports Vidya’s character likes to copy the latest trends on a frugal budget and can’t afford high-end luxury brands. So, she tells her local tailor to copy those for her! “Go to any market and you will find many designers and Bollywood inspired copies, but none are this tacky or loud,” says Swati Bedi.
Though Vidya might look ‘different’ her look has not made Punjabi women happy. “If Punjabi women were her inspiration, she should have picked the right women. Many of us have frugal budgets but we are not cartoons,” says Aneeka Singh, a 27-year-old Punjabi housewife.
We understand movies require a louder than real life approach to add fun to the movie but calling ‘Punjabi’ women inspiration is not a smart move Vidya!
