What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus outside the uterus itself. Typically, it affects areas such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the lining of the pelvis. Occasionally, these abnormal growths can extend beyond the pelvic organs.

The tissue affected by endometriosis behaves similarly to the uterine lining during the menstrual cycle—it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds. However, unlike the uterine lining, this tissue doesn’t exit the body as it should. When endometriosis involves the ovaries, it can lead to the formation of cysts known as endometriomas. Additionally, surrounding tissues may become inflamed, resulting in the formation of scar tissue. This scar tissue can form bands called adhesions, which may cause pelvic organs and tissues to adhere to each other, leading to discomfort and complications.

Endometriosis is a prevalent condition that can significantly impact daily life. Its effects may include chronic pain, disturbances in menstrual patterns, and challenges with fertility. Fortunately, many individuals find relief from its symptoms through various treatment options.
