It is well-known fact that COVID-19 infection has caused various health complications in people and the effects are seen long after the patient tests negative. A recent study has shown that patients with pre-existing health conditions like diabetes or hypertension are at high risk of experiencing a stroke.
People who have a similar infection as COVID-19 have comparatively less chance of the same. The study is based on data collected from American Heart Association’s COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry. Patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19 between the months of January and November and data from 20,000 patients was taken for the study.
“These findings suggest that COVID-19 may increase the risk for stroke, though the exact mechanism for this is still unknown,” said the lead author on the study.
People who experienced an ischemic stroke were also patients of Type 2 diabetes. The average days spent in the hospital also increased for patients who experienced a stroke.
The consequences of a stroke are well-known and it can have fatal effects on overall health.
