October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, though people lend support to cancer by wearing pink. But raising awareness is not just about wearing pink. Here are some key facts all Indian women should know about breast cancer:
Breast cancer is very common: Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in India. There has been a stark rise in breast cancer cases since mid-70s. About 89 per cent women survive breast cancer.
The causes: Family history of cancer doubles the cancer risk, however eight out of nine cancer cases occur in women with no family history.
Obesity, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption and early menstruation can increase your risk by up to 30 per cent.
Early detection is important. Take a look at the video on self-examination for breast cancer.
