Milk is a tasty and healthy drink. You can make shakes, tea, coffee, cheese, yoghurt from milk. This World Milk Day we get you some interesting (and unknown) facts about milk:
- People started drinking milk some 10,000 years ago. Cows were first domesticated in Afghanistan and Iran for milk.
- Milk contains vitamins A, D, and B12, and essential minerals like potassium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium.
- Breast feeding is the most precious milk known to mankind.
- The first artificial milk or milk powder arrived in mid 1800s. The baby formula feeds were invented by Henry Nestlè.
- Louis Pasteur a 19th century French biologist is the man behind pasteurisation which makes milk bacteria free.
- The Milky Way galaxy of which our solar system forms a part of was named so as legend says that it was formed from breast milk of Hera, the wife of Zeus, as she breast-fed Hercules.
- You should never consume milk when you have a cold as studies say it ups mucus production. However, many of us are given the advice to have a cup of warm milk!
- Domesticated cows produce 90 per cent of the world’s milk needs. A cow provides about 90 glasses of milk a day.
- Beside cow and buffalo there is a wide and exotic variety of milk available, camels, yak, elephant, and horses to name a few. Vegan milk that is not from animals is often made using soy, coconut, and almond.
- Many people develop lactose intolerance. Lactose is a form of sugar found in milk and some people cannot digest it.
- A cup of warm milk is the best cure to insomnia.
- Milk can fight tooth decay as it reduces the level of acidity in the mouth that combats plaque formation and reduces chance of cavities.
- Dermatologists say high consumption of milk can cause acne and worsen it too.
