Pulse Polio Day’s are often marked by every parent of a toddler as a Polio Ravivaar or Pulse Polio Sunday. The government has decided that come April 25m a new Polio drop shall be introduced. Polio drops will now change from ‘trivalent’ to ‘bivalent’ meaning that the old Polio drops used to fight P1, P2 and P3 three types of polio viruses.
But in the current scenario, Polio P2 has been completely eradicated. The current vaccine is made to combat all three strains and is hence called trivalent. Over the couse of the polio campaign worldwide, P2 strain is now completely eliminated. So the new oral polio vaccine will be bivalent in nature and develop immunity against only the P1 and P3 strains.
As this order comes into effect, all unused stock of the old Polio vaccine is being destroyed as its improper handling could put the virus back into the air. The officials have advised parents to be careful while getting Polio Drops administered.
