After beating all the odds, the Indian Women National Field Hockey team made a place for themselves at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Hockey is the national sport of the country, but sadly it was never considered so as India has always been very Cricket centered.The Indian hockey players work really hard but never get that respect and attention.
The Indian Women hockey team has gone through a lot struggle and criticism(same as shown in the movie Chak De! India) . But finally after a gap of 36 years the team has entered into Olympics. This is the reason they need more recognition and appreciation. We at AAW are very proud to write about the girls who are making history.
The team has been seeing a little rough patch in the Rio games at the moment, after losing from Australia, but still there are hopes.
Here are some facts that you did not know about our wonderful women’s hockey team:
- The team is also called the ‘Golden Girls of Hockey’ and ‘Assi jaisi koi nahi’.
- The World League Semifinals which took place in Antwerp, our team bagged the 5th position. This was after beating Japan, which at that moment was the highest ranked team in the classification match.
- In 2014 at the Commonwealth Games also, the team got the 5th rank.
- As the financial incentives in playing this game is not much, most players have jobs to support their family while staying in touch with their game.
- In 2015, the team entered the round 2 of Women’s FIH Hockey World League and came on top to qualify for the next stage.
Women should never be underestimated. They are also capable of doing great thing. All they ask for is your support and love. We will definitely be supporting our team on this journey to Rio Olympic Games. Chakhe De Chakde De Chakde India!
