The Madras High Court statement that couples who have premarital sex to be considered ‘married,’ was misread and understood.
It created a furor on twitter with people expressing anger, shock and humour, like, ““Dear Madras HC, If premarital sex is considered as Marriage, is sex with a prostitute considered as Arranged Marriage?” posted a comic.
People misinterpreted the headline and didn’t even bother to read the actual case before passing out the judgement. Justice CS Karnan of the Madras High Court was ruling on a maintenance claim made by a woman who had lived with her partner and had two children with him.
In declaring them married Karnan took many factors into consideration and not just sexual relationship between the two. He considered the fact that they had children and lived as a married couple which made him consider them as married!
