An year back India was shocked when the brutal gang rape was reported. A young woman lost her life and many women, their belief in the system. The entire country stood up for Nirbhaya and said enough is enough but sadly the statics prove this wrong.
In an year post the accident, there has been a sharp 125% jump in the number of rape cases in Delhi. Molestation cases are up manifolds with a staggering 417% case being reported.
Sadly, the 1000 crore fund allocated to the Nirbhaya fund this year, is still lying untouched.
Experts say that the step rise in rape and molestation cases is not because of increase in crime but because many more women are now reporting any misdeed. Infact new laws make cops accountable for recording the FIR and taking action.
Till November this year, Delhi Police registered 1,493 cases of rape against 661 in the corresponding period last year, 3,237 cases of molestation against 625, 852 cases of harassment against 165.
We hope Nirbhaya’s sacrifice does not go in vain. Let us stand up against all injustices women face.
