The young Indian shuttler: PV Sindhu

The 21 year old badminton player, is India’s last hope in bringing home a medal. PV Sindhu, from Hyderabad is two time World Championship bronze-medalist.

Even though this is her fist time playing in the Olympics and she has beaten all odds and made a place in the quarter finals. She has won a straight game from her opponent Tai Tzu Ying. This is not their first match. Tai Tzu had beaten Sindhu at the Demark Open last year. But this year Sindhu came back with a bang. Sindu won the match with a score of 21-13 21-15 in less than a 40 minute match.

Sindhu came from a sports enriched background. Both her parents are professional Volleyball players. Her father Ramana has been given the Arjuna Award for his excellent performance in the sport.

She had her early taste of success. She starting playing badminton at the early age of 8. After this it was no looking back for her. At the age of 14 she won the bronze medal at the 2009 Sub Junior Asian Badminton championship which was held in Colombo.  In 2012 she won the Asia Youth under 19 championship.

Every great person has some who inspires them to success. In Sindhu’s case it was the renowned badminton player Pullel Gopichand. His triumph at the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championship got her hitched to this sport.

In 2014 she was titled as the Indian of the year because she had bagged a bronze medal in the Uber Cup which was held in New Delhi. This medal was won in the team event, proving her abilities as a team member as well.

Till date her best performance was recorded in the 2012 Li Ning China Masters Super Series competition. In this tournament she defeated the 2012 London Olympic gold medalist.

According to the 2015 list of Badminton World Federation, Sindhu was ranked at number 14.
