Condom is the most popular and widely used method of contraception, especially in India. It is the best way to protect against sexually transmitted diseases.  Technically speaking, all condoms go through several test before coming to the market but still sometimes there are chances that a condom a can break or slip while making love. In such a situation don’t panic and try to remain calm. Here are few things to consider and follow if a condom breaks or slips off:

First try to figure out when it happened. If the condom broke after your partner ejaculated, the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases is high.

Check if the condom was torn and look out for the broken piece inside your partner’s vagina, if any.

To protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), wash the genitals with warm water. Avoid using any products. This won’t surely protect you but will reduce the risk.

To avoid pregnancy pee to flush away any sperm those maybe near your urethra. You can also remove the excess sperm by squeezing with your vaginal muscles while squatting on the pot.

If blood, semen or vaginal fluids come to contact with an open wound, disinfect it with betadine.

Take an emergency contraception if you are not using any other contraceptive. This should be taken in the first 72 hours after a condom breaks.

To ensure that everything is fine do visit your gynecologist two weeks after the last sexual intercourse.

Tips to avoid such situation

Always store condoms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Check the expiry date before using.

Never use any sharp object (teeth, scissors, etc) to open the condom foil.
