MC Mary Kom on Wednesday became the first Indian woman boxer to bag a gold medal at the Asian Games. She beat Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (51KG) summit clash.
Mary Kom was the only Indian boxer in action on Wednesday. Mary Kom defeated Shekerbekova 2-0 in a evenly-contested battle.
PTI reports that five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist, who won a bronze at her 2010 Asiad debut, shifted gears with ease to triumph. Mary Kom preferred to keep a distance and invited Shekerbekova to launch the first attack, however, Mary was outwitted in the opening two minutes.
But Mary did not give up easily and reworked strategy that stunned Shekerbekova with her aggression in the second round.
The Manipuri mother-of-three, who is called the ‘Magnificent Mary’ by the International Boxing Association for her unprecedented feats, began to dominate in the third round and won.
