Teghbir Celebrates His Epic Climb with a Proud Dad and Dedicated Coach by His Side!
At just five years old, Teghbir Singh from Ropar, Punjab, has made history by becoming the youngest Asian to conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, standing proudly at 19,340 feet (5,895 meters). Teghbir’s incredible journey to the summit began on August 18, 2024, and reached its triumphant climax on August 23, 2024, when he stood atop Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the mountain.
This isn’t his first big climb either—earlier this year, he trekked to the base camp of Mt Everest! But Kilimanjaro was a whole new challenge, especially for someone so young. The climb was tough, and he had to deal with altitude sickness, freezing temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius, and even a snowstorm! But he kept going, chanting “Waheguru” to keep his spirits up. His hard work paid off when he finally reached the summit and received a special certificate from the Tanzania National Parks, proving he made it to the top.
His father, Sukhinderdeep Singh, was right there with him, and his coach, Bikramjit Singh Ghuman, had been training him for nearly a year. Teghbir practiced by going on weekly treks and walking 8-10 kilometers every day to build his strength and get used to high altitudes.
The first time they tried to reach the summit, they had to turn back because of a snowstorm but Teghbir and his team didn’t give up. They tried again and succeeded on their second attempt. His mom, Dr. Manpreet Kaur, who’s a gynecologist says, “Diet played a major role in Teghbir’s journey. He followed a strict diet schedule as laid down by his coach.”
“I knew where I was to reach and finally made it. I have a picture there with my father. I was told to chant ‘Wahe Guru’ when it got difficult on the way. It gave me strength and I was able to reach the summit”, shared Teghbir in an interview.
Teghbir now shares his record with a Serbian boy named Ognjen Zivkovic, who also climbed Kilimanjaro at age five. But Teghbir is the youngest in all of Asia to do it, which is an amazing achievement! His story shows that with a lot of determination and support, even the biggest dreams can come true, no matter how young you are.
