Shehnaz Treasury Ishq vishk fame has been recently diagnosed with a medical condition called prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness. In a series of Instagram stories, the actress explained that she has been diagnosed with a cognitive disorder and can now understand why she has trouble recognizing faces and voices, even of people she has known for a while.
“I have been diagnosed with prosopagnosia. Now, I understand why I’ve never been able to put faces together,” Shenaz Treasury, 41, wrote on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, reports news agency PTI. “You have difficulty recognizing neighbors, friends, coworkers, clients, schoolmates. People you know expect you to recognize them. Failing to recognize someone might make you seem aloof. Many sufferers report losing friends and offending coworkers because they have failed to recognize them. This is me. And I thought I was just dumb,” she wrote.
Earlier, Brad Pitt also opened up about this same condition, The actor said that in social settings, especially parties, he “struggles to remember new people” and “recognize their faces”, which leads to them thinking he is “remote and aloof, inaccessible, self-absorbed”.
What is prosopagnosia?
According to the National Health Service (NHS), face blindness usually affects people from birth and can severely impact their everyday life. Many people who are diagnosed with prosopagnosia are not able to recognize family members, partners, or friends.
Though, people who suffer from prosopagnosia have difficulty recognizing people’s faces out of context. To compensate for this patients use their other senses and cues such as voice, shapes, and anomalous contours of the face for recognition.
Symptoms of prosopagnosia:
- The primary symptom is an inability to recognize persons by their faces.
- Poor recognition of familiar individuals.
- Feelings of disorientation in crowded locations.
- Establishing identities through telltale clothing, hairstyles, jewelry, perfumes, or colognes.
- Not meeting new people
