Check out the new rules rolled by the Supreme Court for Diwali:
Every year Supreme Court makes some changes in the usage of firecrackers on Diwali and this year too they have come up with some variations. The Supreme Court did not ban the firecrackers but restricted the usage to tackle the dangerous condition of pollution in Delhi and other cities.
The court has allowed the “safe and green” crackers from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali. The crackers add toxic smog in Delhi, when the capital becomes the world’s most polluted city. The court said: No “low-emission” firecrackers exist yet, so today’s order may well be a ban. “We tried to strike a balance”.
They have announced a two-hour limit for bursting crackers at festivals and weddings. Though, a petition on behalf of three infants in 2015 had called for a complete ban.
Check out the verdict of the court below:
- People can burst firecrackers between 11.55 to 12.30 am on Christmas and New year.
- In Delhi, crackers will be allowed only in few spots, which are yet to be decided.
- Only licensed Traders can sell firecrackers.
- Only the crackers which are under noise pollution limits will be allowed, the chain firecracker “ladi” are banned.
- The police officer in charge of an area will be solely responsible for any violation of the new rules.
- Crackers cannot be sold online and if they are, then the e-commerce sites will be towed up for contempt. The court referred to Flipkart and Amazon.
Every year the smoke created by the firecrackers covers Delhi and neighboring cities, which increase the pollution level in the air. Last year, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal called the city a “gas chamber.” The air quality index has crossed 300 in Delhi and anything above 100 is considered dangerous.
We hope people abide by the rules and make limited use of crackers after all the pollution causes many diseases.
